You don't have to be a rocket scientist....
to harangue NASA astronomers about the Big Bang, it seems.
Physicists are - rightly - getting very angry. We biologists have had so much of this nonsense, it's tempting just to shrug wearily and be relieved that it's someone else's turn. But that would be wrong, mkay? This is an opportunity to put up a united front. So write to your MP or elected representative of your choice and ask what they will do to protect scientific research and science eduation from the recent surge of lunacy.
I did, and I got a prompt, if vague, reply which I have accidentally deleted. Bother.

Sadly that site seems to be down at the moment. I can guess at the content though.

Bush has appointed a press officer at NASA, who emailed a scientist instructing him to put the word 'theory' after every mention of the Big Bang in educational material he was preparing for schools.
The email said the Big Bang was "not proven fact; it is opinion," and another snippet reads: "It is not NASA's place, nor should it be to make a declaration such as this about the existence of the universe that discounts intelligent design by a creator. This is more than a science issue, it is a religious issue. And I would hate to think that young people would only be getting one-half of this debate from NASA."
The officer, a Mr Deutsch, has no science qualifications. But he did work for Bush and Cheney in the election campaign.

Busted.
He's resigned, probably because he lied on his CV rather than for attempting to pervert the course of scientific debate, but still, good riddance.
