34th Carnival of the Feminists

Welcome!
It's been great fun putting this together. I'd express this more effusively, but it's nearly midnight, so I'll dish up the links and shuttup.

First - to get the depressing bit over with - we have some upsetting stories from India, Zimbabwe, and, indeed, Massachusetts. A Bird And A Bottle talks about young women in prison, while Liberal Debutante is horrified and baffled by pro-anorexia websites.
In Canada, however, the government reckons feminism is not needed any more. F-email Fightback protests against their plan to shut down most offices of Status of Women in Canada.

Lest we despair, Zuky has some Non-depressing nuggets, and Laura has some photos from Women's Day celebrations in Chile. Alarming Female celebrates Shirley Chisholm. And here's some more Happy news - she's back!

Work and Life
Today's Apathetic Youth shows us how badly some companies deal with the concept that employees have lives.Grabapple comments on the curious discrepancy between the touted Opt Out Revolution and reality. Daddy Dialectic, a group blog by stay-at-home dads, submitted some cracking posts including this one on the downside of breadwinning.

Culture, Pop or Otherwise
At 79soul, a post in honour of 'The Yellow Wallpaper.
And She Knits Too! and her commenters compile a list of thoughtful books for kids about reproduction.
Tacithydra reviews video games from a feminist perspective.
G gets irritated with one reality TV sensation, and Blue at the Gimp Parade gets even angrier with another, namely Miss Ability, a disabled women's beauty contest.

Pick and Mix
Anna at Feminists Don't Bake Bread wants to know more about the history of women's shelters, a subject Team Rainbow visit while musing on charity and 'militancy'.
Walking Upstream wishes for trans-courtesy, and Girl With Pen for intergenerational feminism.
One Brown Woman talks about guilt and privilege.
Ginmar wonders if sexism cures racism.
Can't Holder Tongue explains why she'd always vote for the woman.

OMG TEH SECS
(NB: Best not to click these while your boss is reading over your shoulder.)
Cassandra Says it's Female Desire Week, and The Anti-Essentailist Conundrum agrees.
Hedonistic Pleasureseeker pleasingly rounds off an admirable rant byshowing us her arse.
Meanwhile, sleazy blokes are categorised and mocked at The Stripper Hates You.

Confused? Take Feminism 101.

Want more?
Try Scientiae, the women in science carnival, or the seventeen squillion links at Blog Against Sexism Day. Coming up soon are Blog Against Sexual Violence Day on the 5th of April, and of course the 35th Feminist Carnival on 4th April at The F Word.

And Finally...
Sojourness at The Feminist Pulse encourages her little sister's ambitions, with no help whatsoever from Google.
Blog of the Moderate Left warns against the potentially horrifying social consequences of toddlers dancing with their mummies.
Lastly, Body Impolitic has a splendid response to the sorority purge at Alpha Seltza or whatever its name was. I sniggered immensely.

Enjoy!

They're such very good droppers

Up in the coolibah trees
Down in the antipodes
Lives a mysterious brute
Snacking on leaves and ripe fruit
A long tail coated with fuzz
Looks like a wallaby does
That ought to give you a clue
Must be a tree kangaroo

One day I'll go to the zoo
Hopefully you can come too
We'll shun the lions and gnu
Snub the okapi and shrew
You can play didgeridoo
While I sing this chorus to
Tenkile, bondegezou,
All kinds of tree kangaroo:

Oh Dendrolagus
You are a macropod
Must be a plague as
It makes your feet so odd
You're phyllophagous
Munching on the tree-top
You crazy beast, you
Look like you ought to hop
But then at least, you
Keep bouncing when you drop
Out of the tree,
Outrageous
Dendrolagus...

Sing this to the tune of Can't Take My Eyes Off You. Better still, sing the Beatles' Love me do, replacing ALL the lyrics with 'Tree kangaroo'.
